when working with us
Here we answer some popular questions our clients ask, when working with us.
What services do you offer?
We provide a wide range of civil and structural engineering services including feasibility studies, civil and structural engineering design, building inspections and construction-stage technical advice and design clarifications where required. We typically work for a wide range of clients including private homeowners, commercial property owners, developers, general builders and maintenance contractors. We are also able to liaise with other design professionals on your behalf including architects and M&E consultants, ecologists and sustainability consultants.
What information do you need to start design of my project?
We typically require architectural layout drawings or site surveys, planning reports and a brief containing any specific design preferences or constraints. Simply contact us via phone, email or our website with the project details and we can provide a tailored quote.
What areas do you cover?
We serve clients locally and regionally. Our projects are normally located in Somerset or Wiltshire; however, we are happy to cover projects across the South of England, including the M4 corridor.
How long does the design process take and what do you deliver when the project is complete?
Timescales vary on a project-by-project basis depending on size and complexity. A small residential extension or internal refurbishment project should take approximately 1-2 weeks to complete; larger and more complex commercial developments can take several months to complete. As part of our service, we can prepare calculations, drawings, materials specifications and schedules, and structural reports.
Do you provide support for Building Regulations and Planning applications?
Yes. As part of our design process, we can prepare our drawings and calculations for a Building Regulations (Part A – Structure) submission. Where required, we can liaise with the local authority Building Regulations or Planning departments to support the Building Control or Planning review process, as required.
Are you insured and professionally accredited?
Yes, we hold professional indemnity insurance coverage. Our engineers are registered with the IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineers).
What design standards and codes of practice do you follow?
Our designs are prepared in accordance with relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and Building Regulations, appropriate to the agreed scope. Our design work is led and checked by a Chartered Engineer.
What structural materials do you design with?
We work with the main construction materials used for projects in the UK including structural steelwork, concrete, timber and masonry.
Can you provide structural reports for mortgage applications or for insurance or for legal compliance purposes?
Yes. We offer structural condition surveys and site inspections to assess structural defects, with recommendations provided in our report for due diligence, insurance claims and mortgage applications.
Can you carry out value engineering to reduce the costs of a project?
Yes, we can support value engineering to improve buildability and efficiency, while maintaining the required performance and structural design intent within the agreed scope.
Do you offer inspection or structural assessment of existing buildings?
Yes, we conduct structural surveys and inspections for both residential and commercial properties, including structural condition surveys and specific defect inspections. Our advice is based on the agreed scope and information available at the time, and does not include supervision of construction, temporary works, or contractor workmanship unless expressly agreed in writing.
How are your fees structured?
Fees are normally fixed for well-defined design briefs. However, for projects where the scope needs to be flexible, our fees would be charged at an hourly rate, with the maximum time and resource input proposed at the start of the project.
We offer an initial call to discuss your requirements and define the scope of services. Fees for site visits and detailed assessments depend on scope and location.
